ElderSafe®

"But he was so kind and helpful.  I never thought that he would..."

With the senior population continuing to grow, rising concerns about their safety and well-being must be addressed. Senior citizens are at risk for personal injury, and financial and medical disasters. The plight of these at-risk citizens often goes unheeded. The need to educate people in all age groups about the special issues will continue to increase as the population ages and the number of retirees in our area increases.

ElderSafe® addresses many issues faced by senior citizens throughout the US. In our program, we provide a broad of spectrum information related to elderly health, safety, and fiscal issues. We also provide hands-on training in personal and property protection. The program raises awareness and helps to eliminate misplaced fear.

Topics include:

  • Developing personal health and safety skills
    • Falling
    • Food handling
  • Personal safety skills: Protecting one’s self
  • Medical safety and care
  • Cultural awareness
  • Elder abuse
  • Home and personal security tips
  • Common senior scams (pigeon drop, bank examiner calls, etc.)
  • Communicating emergencies to police and others.

Sessions are composed of one two-hour class each week for 8 weeks.

Most sessions meet for one hour each week for 8 weeks. Sessions may last longer based on topic and interest. Our program can also be customized to meet the specific needs of various groups.

Senior Advocates - Once a person has completed our ElderSafe program, they can attend additional sessions to become a Senior Advocate. Our Senior Advocate program extends PeopleSafe’s goal to insure a healthy and safe living environment for our senior citizens. Advocates help other seniors to reduce the chances of falling in their homes. They do this by helping our senior clients make their homes physically safer, suggesting appropriate exercise programs to help reduce the chances of falling, and by assisting them in reviewing their medications and having their vision checked. By making changes in these areas, seniors can greatly reduce their chances of falling and in-home injuries.
